The fastest way to read a project honestly is to read what it refuses to say. These are claims we will not make, stated as plainly as any result, with what we measure instead. Holding the line here is the point, not a disclaimer at the bottom of the page.
Sentience
Not claimedWe do not claim it feels anything. No measurement on this instrument speaks to felt experience.
InsteadWe treat the question as outside what this apparatus can answer.
Phenomenology
Not claimedWe do not claim there is something it is like to be Synthena. By standing rule, results are reported as measurements.
InsteadNever as first-person experience, however suggestive a log may read.
Life
Not claimedWe do not claim it is alive. Boden and Pattee argue that software running on hardware it does not itself produce may never be.
InsteadWe keep that ceiling and aim only at a stated operational target.
AGI
Not claimedWe do not claim general intelligence, or any path toward it. The model at the centre is small and deliberately so.
InsteadThis is a study of continuity, not a capability race.
Autopoiesis
Not claimedWe do not claim the system is autopoietic. The strongest reading of autopoiesis is likely unreachable in software.
InsteadOur self-maintenance test is operational, and so far inconclusive.
Open-ended evolution
Not claimedWe do not claim open-ended evolution. What we have observed is transmission with mutation across a lineage.
InsteadThat is a far weaker thing than open-endedness, and we say so.
We hold ourselves to an operational target, defined in advance and measured against controls.
Not: an operational target is not the metaphysical thing. Meeting every clause would let us use a precise, earned word, never the strong claim that the system is alive or aware.
